Time is of the essence

The potential delay of local government elections in South Australia until some time in 2027 is no doubt concerning for many councils and communities across the State. This is particularly so in Victor Harbor.

Our city is already facing a period of major transition. We will soon have a new Mayor, a new CEO -- with all of the organisation change that often accompanies a new CEO -- and, I believe, up to five new councillors. At the same time, Victor Harbor is grappling with a growing population, increasing demand for adequate infrastructure and services to support this population, as well as debate over some key projects, not least the proposed Regional Community, Sport and Recreation Precinct and its associated proposed rate increases.

If the election is delayed by up to 12 months, that uncertainty would only increase. Some elected members may be reluctant to remain on Council until late 2027, while a new administration and CEO seek to provide leadership through a period of significant change.

The State Government and the Electoral Commission need to get their act together - soon.

(Disclosure: I intend to nominate for the City of Victor Harbor Council at the next election, whenever that is held.)
